Dear Colleagues,
As we wrap up the calendar year and step into this season of reflection and restoration, I encourage each of you to make the time to renew your spirit and consider an important question: Why do we do this work?
For me, the answer lies in my own lived experiences, the sacrifices of my ancestors, and the stories of so many others in our communities who encourage us to continue, even when it feels impossible.
This year has reminded us what is at stake. It has also underscored that we cannot defend or do this work alone. Leaders, organizations, and coalitions across our field are facing these challenges as well. Many bring not only resources, strategies, and commitments but the courage to stand firm in the face of resistance. They remind us of the power of collaboration and the responsibility we have to speak to the consequences of disengagement.
We are in a moment of change and adaptation. But adaptation is not the same as surrender, nor does it mean we waver in our values and commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion. This is a time to be strategic, collaborative, and purposeful. We’ve seen results — and those results cannot be minimized, or dismissed out of hand, as they are grounded in research and driven by our collective commitment. Carry these lessons forward into the new year, and remain confident in our purpose and united in our resolve.
Thank you for your dedication and courage. Your work instills in our students the belief that they can succeed, and advances our future toward inclusive excellence.
In solidarity and community,
Paulette Granberry Russell, J.D.
